Moorhead police responding to incidents of unsupervised young children wandering onto busy streets
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

MOORHEAD – Police here are responding Wednesday to two separate incidents of young unattended children wandering into busy streets.

Moorhead Police Lt. Tory Jacobson said around 11:30 a.m. that officers were at an apartment building located at 2408 Third Ave. N. interviewing who they believe to be the father or guardian of two young children who were found walking on the roadway of nearby U.S. Highway 75.

“They picked the children up and brought them to the station, and we are looking into how these two very small children in diapers were not being supervised,” he said.

Jacobson said it was unclear if the children are siblings. They appear to be 2 to 3 years old, he said.

At 11:30 a.m., Moorhead police also were on their way to respond to a separate report of an unsupervised 1-year-old and 3-year-old reportedly jumping out into the street in the Village Green area.

Jacobson said the investigations were ongoing in both cases. But he said if officers have already identified the father or guardian of the two young children along Highway 75, it’s likely that there will be some type of resolution in this case by the afternoon.

“We work with social services and whatever immediate actions have to be taken are, and then we continue with social services,” he said.

The issue of unattended children has become an urgent one in Moorhead in recent days following the June 11 death of a 5-month-old baby girl who died when her father left her in a hot van for several hours.

Andrew Sandstrom, 24, was charged Tuesday with felony manslaughter Tuesday alleging he was neglectful in causing the death of Christiana Sandstrom, who is being buried today.
