Moorhead’s Horizon Middle School was locked down for about 45 minutes Friday as police checked the building and neighborhood to be sure a man hadn’t entered the school after allegedly trying to lure a child.

The lockdown started about 11:15 a.m., when a girl in a physical education class reported to a teacher that she had been approached by a stranger passing by on foot, Moorhead police Lt. Deric Swenson said.

Swenson said the student had been running on the inside of the fence on the Horizon property. The girl told police that when she got to a corner of the property, a man asked her to come to him, and he started trying to climb the fence.

The girl said she yelled and screamed, and the man ran away.

After school officials were notified, the school was put into exterior lockdown with all entrances secured, Swenson said.

Officers swept through the school to ensure there were no intruders until security video could be examined, Swenson said. Other officers searched nearby neighborhoods and didn’t find anyone matching the description given by the student, Swenson said.

The lockdown ended about 12:15 p.m., said Dan Bacon, a school district official.
