Neil Handlos

Neil M. Handlos, 94, of Lake Park, died Wednesday, September 1, 2010 in Detroit Lakes.

Neil Melton Handlos was born to Albert and Flora (Pentz) Handlos on September 3, 1915 in Sydney, Mont. He attended school in Montana and later joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He then enlisted in the Navy, where he was an aircraft navigator and a flight engineer.

After his time in the Navy, Neil returned to the Midwest, where he ranched and farmed before starting as a contractor. On February 1, 1941, he married Wilma Wheeler in Webeau, Mont. They moved to Upper Cormorant Lake in 1958. Wilma died in 1996.

After retirement, Neil volunteered with Senior Companions for over 20 years. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodcarving and gardening. Neil was a lifetime member of the VFW in West Fargo, and a member of the American Legion in Lake Park.

Surviving Neil are his daughter, Mary (Jack) Dunford of Coon Rapids, Minn.; two grandchildren, Michael (Michelle) Dunford of Eden Prairie, Minn., and Colleen (James) Johnson of Mounds View, Minn.; five great-grandchildren, Kathleen and Emily Dunford, Madisen, Sawyer and Wyatt Johnson; and two half-sisters, Mona Handlos of Denver, Colo., and Kitty (Bob) Reed of Vermont.

Preceding him in death were his wife Wilma; parents; three brothers, Donald, Keith and Grant; and two half-brothers. Gene and Mic.

Visitation is from 2 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, followed by the funeral at 3 p.m., in Wright Funeral Home, Lake Park. Immediately following the service there will be a social at the Lake Park American Legion.

Interment will be at a later date in Long Prairie, Minn.
