Nena Rae Seward was born to Francis and Viola (Shaw) Seward on August 22, 1955 in Fargo. She attended school in Detroit Lakes and Ulen. In 2006 she received her Associates of Arts Degree in Early Childhood Education.

Nena married Eugene Bartnes on Sept. 13, 1974 in Detroit Lakes. In their 34 years together they were blessed with four children: Kelly, Janice, Gene, and Dave.

Nena worked for Mahube Head Start, Callaway Public School, Star Adventure Kid Center and most recently as a manager at the Mahnomen Child Care Learning Center.

Nena will be best remembered for her wonderful, loving heart. She had a fun, loving and generous spirit and her unconditional love was felt by everyone she met. She was independent and a jack of all trades. She could do everything and anything. She enjoyed working on the farm with Gene and getting together with her family at gatherings. She loved spending time with her children and most of all, spoiling her grandchildren. In her spare time she enjoyed watching "Little House on the Prairie" and doing crossword puzzles.

Nena will be deeply missed by her husband Eugene; two daughters, Kelly (Matt) Carrier and Janice (Shane) LaFriniere, both of Detroit Lakes; two sons, Gene (Emily) Bartnes and Dave (Andrea) Bartnes, also of Detroit Lakes; mother and stepfather, Viola Seward and Allen Knopf of Rochert; three sisters, Mary (Kevin) Boit of Detroit Lakes, Vicki (Danny) Alder of Lake Park and Dawn Seward of Moorhead; as well as nine grandchildren.

Preceding Nena in death were her father, Francis Seward; two brothers, Joe Seward and Jeff Seward; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Russell and Agnes Bartnes; two brothers-in-law, David Bartnes and Denny Mackner; and sister-in-law Janice Freligh.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 26, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, at West-Kjos Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes.

Memorial services are set for 11 a.m. Monday, July 27 at Grace Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, with the Rev. Eric Lemonholm officiating.

Honorary pallbearers will be Gene Bartnes, Dave Bartnes, Burt Bartnes, Bob Bartnes, Matt Carrier, Shane LaFriniere and Donald Brown.

In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials. Arrangements have been entrusted to West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes. Those wanting to share memories and condolences are invited to use the funeral Home's online messages of sympathy section at www.westkjos.com.
