New classes start this week at DLCCC
As the holiday season draws to a close and the new year begins, many local residents are acting on their resolutions to make a renewed commitment to health and fitness -- and the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center has several new class offerings to make that commitment a little more fun.
In the BTD Aquatics Center, aquatics program director Kim Bettcher has added an adult swim team class, which begins Tuesday. Instructor Tracy Pechmann will teach the class, which meets every Tuesday and Thursday.
This class is unique because it offers the type of activities normally reserved for competitive high school or college swimmers, such as working on improving strokes and turns, and creating a customized workout tailored to the individual needs of each participant.
Also available is an "Oodles of Noodles" water exercise class which uses "water noodles" to provide added support. Taught by Teri Haapala, this class is for all levels of fitness, Bettcher says.
"We also have ongoing activities such as swim lessons, the Sunfish swim team and open swimming," she added.
And instructor Leslie Johnson has once again begun offering her popular "Aqua-Fit" class every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Open to all ages, the program is "a great option for people who have been walkers or treadmill users, but want to vary their routines a little," Bettcher said.
Meanwhile, on the land-based fitness side of things, fitness director Brent Wolf has begun offering "Center Cycling" classes that use a technique similar to that of the patented fitness program known as "spinning."
These 45-minute workout sessions are available in both low and high-intensity format.
"We currently are offering five classes per week," Wolf said.
High intensity cycling classes run every Tuesday and Thursday, Jan. 9-Feb. 22, from noon to 12:45 p.m.; every Monday and Friday, Jan. 8-Feb. 23, from 7-7:45 p.m.; Saturdays, Jan. 13-Feb. 24 from 10:15-11 a.m.
Low-intensity cycling classes run every Monday and Wednesday, Jan. 8-Feb. 21, from 7:30-8:15 a.m.; and Fridays from Jan. 12-Feb. 23, noon to 12:45 p.m.
Instructors include Kesley Myhre, Teri Haapala, Patty Jaeger and Lori Paakh.
"Its popularity has grown because it's a relatively quick, 45-minute workout that burns 500-700 calories," Wolf said.
Because there are only a limited number of bikes available for each session, pre-registration is required for all Center Cycling classes, he added.
One other ongoing activity that starts its winter session today (Sunday) is Hot Hands youth basketball. Open to boys and girls in grades 2-5, the classes offer participants an opportunity to learn skills that they will be able to show off to the public during halftime at an upcoming Detroit Lakes Lakers high school basketball game (date to be announced).
There is also a Silver Sneakers exercise class geared toward participants age 65 and above, which meets every Tuesday and Thursday.
"The class is geared toward our Silver Sneakers program participants, but it is open to anyone who would like to join," Wolf said.
Though the classes are open to everyone, DLCCC members get a significant discount on session fees, Wolf noted.
