Becker County Fair

The 118th annual Becker County Fair kicks off with 4-H and FFA Open Class registration. The first two animal showings -- those for poultry and rabbits -- will be in the Amanda Foltz Arena that morning. Bingo will open at 2 p.m., and the Commercial Building and Midway will welcome visitors beginning at 5 p.m. For some fresh entertainment, catch comic stunt juggler Tuey Wilson's show under the Big Tent at either 2 or 4 p.m. Also, the Miss and Junior Miss Becker County Fair Pageant will take place Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Grandstand; $7 will buy your way in. For free country western musical amusement, make sure to catch Danny Holt under the Big Tent at 7:15.

Thursday, July 30

Becker County Fair

Thursday at the Becker County Fair is Senior Day, and will see a huge showing of farm animals: lambs, sheep, market goats, swine, and beef will all be out on display over the course of the day in the Amanda Foltz Arena. The Senior Citizen Awards Program will be held in the Big Tent at 1:15 p.m., and at 2:45 the recently returned Mustache and Beard Contest will take place. Back due to demand, the Callens Family will provide Thursday's musical entertainment, with show times at 1:45, 4 and 7:30 p.m., all under the Big Tent. The second annual Sand Run, an easy-to-clean take on a mud race, will have competitors on the starting line in the Grandstand at 6:30 p.m. Admission will be $7 for adults and $5 for those 12 and younger. The thrill is guaranteed to be worth the expense.

Refuge tour

Tamarac Wildlife Refuge offers a Refuge tour from 10 a.m. to noon (every Thursday through August). Join a refuge guide for an informative and fun adventure on the refuge. Search for wildlife and learn about the cultural and natural history of Tamarac.

Live at the Lodge

The Lodge on Lake Detroit will host a free "Live at the Lodge" concert every Thursday through Aug. 27. Jazz duo Dave Ferreira (piano/vocals) and Russ Peterson (sax) will perform in the Lodge's Fireside Lobby from 7 to 10 p.m. The concert is free and open to the public as well as hotel guests. Becker County Fair

Friday is Kids' Day at the Becker County Fair, with games for kids under the Big Tent for 90 minutes, beginning at 1:45 p.m. that afternoon. There will also be a Horse Show in the Horse Arena and two dairy shows in the Amanda Foltz Arena. Performances for the day are Gary Wick and Friends -- a comedic ventriloquist act -- showing at 1, 3:30 and 4:30 p.m., and Doc and the Scrubs at 7:45 p.m., all of which will be held in the Big Tent. In the Grandstand, the annual Demo Derby will return with stock cars, compact pick-ups and minivans at 7 p.m. Admission to the derby is $5 for kids 12 and under and $7 for adults.

'Sesame Street Live!'

Elmo, the lovable red monster, will bring his Sesame Street pals along for a visit to the Fargodome at 7 p.m. -- the first of five performances of "Elmo's Green Thumb" to be presented in Fargo. All seats, excluding the $24 Gold Circle seating, are $14 for the opening night performance. The Fargodome is located at 1800 North University Drive in Fargo. For more information, call 701-241-9100. Becker County Fair

The Becker County Fair concludes with Family Day, which includes the Becker County Fair Tractor Rendezvous' debut at 11 a.m. At 1 p.m., the 4-H Horse Fun Show will be held in the Horse Arena. The fair's second Demo Derby -- this time showing 4 cylinders and pick-ups -- will again be staged at 7 p.m. in the Grandstand. The Big Tent will house a multitude of events throughout the day, from 12:30's 4-H Fashion Revue to arts and crafts at 3 p.m. In Capable Hands, a two-person variety show featuring comedy and juggling, will perform at 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Beginning at 6 p.m., the King Agassiz, Fair Builder of the Past and Present, and Century Farm awards will be presented. The evening will wrap up with some tunes by the Melody Playboys at 7:30 p.m.

NYM artists' reception

The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center will host an artists' reception for its latest art exhibit at 2 p.m. Ellen Eilers is a 92-year-old painter whose work recalls the style of Grant Wood and American Regionalism; and Roxanne Sorenson, also from Alexandria, is a sculpture artist who also has the distinction of being a past finalist in the Great American Think-Off at the Cultural Center. Those attending the reception will have an opportunity to meet the artists and view their work. The exhibit will be on display at the center from July 29 through Wednesday, Sept. 2. Tuesdays in the Park

The Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series continues with a live performance by the Purple Pan Steel Drum Band at 7 p.m. in the DL City Park Bandshell. It is a free show, and open to the public. Upcoming performances include the Ulen Community Band, Aug. 11; Doc & the Scrubs, Aug. 18; and the Lakes Area Community Concert Band, Aug. 25. Before each Tuesday's concert, Thrivent Builds for Habitat will also have a picnic fund-raiser, grilling up fresh burgers and brats for sale at the shelter near the bandshell from 6 to 7 p.m. Call 218-844-SHOW (7469) for more information.

'Dearly Departed'
