New grant helps paint the town red
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

"I dream of painting and then I paint my dream." -- Vincent Van Gogh.

For those who wish to paint their dream, West Central Initiative and Minneapolis-based Valspar Corporation offer the opportunity to get paint, stain and other products for restoration and beautification projects through the Minnesota Beautiful Grant.

The grant is open to communities and public organizations in Becker, Clay, Douglas, Grant, Otter Tail, Pope, Stevens, Traverse and Wilkin counties.

Organizations in Lake Park are encouraged to fill out and return individual applications to the Clerk's Office at 2032 2nd Street by Feb. 11 to be included in the large combined application that will be submitted by the deadline in March. Winners will be notified by the end of March.

Paint, stain and sealants, will be awarded to the projects that best meet the criteria of Visual impact of the project, public benefit to the community, volunteer participation and support, and historic or cultural significance. Project ideas include historic buildings, landmarks, senior facilities, community centers, murals or other visual impact projects.

While denominational churches, schools (except murals), city maintenance or privately owned facilities do not meet the criteria, these groups would be welcomed as volunteers.

No initial limits are set on product amounts for any one project. Valspar determines each fiscal year the total amount of products they are able to grant on a statewide basis. Projects are awarded based on meeting the criteria as well as product availability.
