This was the year, the year to open a shop of her own, said local stylist Sharon Johnson.

"I've helped several owners of salon's start their businesses, which has been exciting as well as educational," she explained.

In the business for more than 30 years, Johnson recently opened Sharon's Style at 1152 South Washington Avenue in Detroit Lakes, the former Trinity Mortgage building. Offering hairstyling, massage and pedicure, Sharon's Style features leased stations for independent stylists to maintain their own businesses within the Sharon's Style umbrella.

"I decided this would be a good time to strike out on my own and I wanted to be able to provide other stylists in town a place to be an inde-pendent business owner too. So I decided to lease out the stations."

Signing the purchase agreement on her new beauty venue the first part of January, the next task was to transform the former mortgage office into a salon haven.

"I wanted to create a very relaxing atmosphere. We really dug in. Every-body, contractors and family alike, kicked butt to get everything done in a couple of months," said the salon owner. "It looks great and has lots of private spaces."

The new salon is comprised of five hair stations along with a pedicure area, private massage room and a bank of east facing windows.

"I love all the natural light in this building. I have to have sunlight where I work whether it's sunny out-side or not," she explained.

Johnson added, with the renova-tion, she included a couple of state-of-the-art implements to her salon.

"Starting from scratch, I ordered in new top-of-the-line hair stations that are two and a half inches taller than the standard ones so there isn't as much bending over."

A handicap accessible ramp and bathroom were also added to the re-vamped building, commented Johnson.

"It is a real bonus to have a main floor bathroom after having worked in so many older buildings with basement bathrooms."

In addition to Johnson, two new station owner/stylists will be joining Sharon's Style come March 31.

After cosmetology school, John-son started her career in beauty in 1978 at Lords and Milady's in Detroit Lakes. Through the years, she has worked at a variety of local beauty venues including Beauty Lane, The Beauty Box, Bonnie Lee's for Hair Design, Jonathon's and Barbara's Hair and Body Care. The veteran stylist also maintained Sharon's Style in her home from 2000 to 2006.

Johnson came by her new business digs when long time friend and local realtor Opal Rogstad asked her to come and take a look the available space.

"She showed me the building and suggested it would be a great retire-ment investment, which got me to thinking and kind of set everything into motion," said Johnson.

Johnson has a small business management degree from MSCTC-Detroit Lakes, and the local stylist is a Nexxus Aloxxi Chroma Colour Educator.

"I use Nexxus and Matrix products and have for years. Their products do what they say and are not fads."

A native of the lakes area, Johnson currently resides in Detroit Lakes.

"I believe we live in the best com-munity. I've raised my family here and my children are raising grandchildren here and I am excited to start my business here."

All in the family, daughter Barbara Steger is also in the salon business just up the road at Barbara's Hair and Body Care.

"I love my profession and I am very flattered that my daughter Barbara has followed me in this career. That we can maintain separate salons is a testament to the individualism of our visions for this profession," she concluded. "It's all good."
