New 'Spirit of Place' art exhibit opens at NYM

Seven works by 20 artists from Minneapolis to Moorhead form the first "Spirit of Place" art exhibit at New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, which will run through Aug. 2. The show includes sculpture, painting, photography, mixed media, pastel, watercolor, and an installation piece. There is no admission charge for this show. The exhibit is the first annual juried show focusing on place to be held at the Center. Gallery hours are Tuesday-Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.; and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.at the Gallery on Main Street in New York Mills. The public is invited to a reception in honor of the artists on Thursday, July 10 at 7:30 p.m.

The Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series continues this week at the Detroit Lakes City Park Bandshell, with an appearance by Doc & the Scrubs on July 8 at 7 p.m. There will be free, live music every Tuesday through the months of June, July and August -- with the exception of July 15. In case of inclement weather, the concerts will be moved from the bandshell to the DL Pavilion. The fifth annual Family Jam, "Concert and Fun in the Light of the Son,"?is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 13 at the Detroit Lakes City Park, near the DL Pavilion. Enjoy musical performances from regional and nationally known entertainers including Warren Barfield, Triad 4 Christ, Freedom's Call (from Bemidji), world-renowned speaker Morris Goodman, also known as the "Miracle Man," and famed illusionist Brock Gill. In addition, there will be food booths; Games Galore; a community youth service featuring bands Noiseunion and Kaboose; and much more. The Cormorant Area Art Club will hold its 11th Annual Art Show Saturday and Sunday, July 12-13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The event will be held at the Cormorant Community Center located in Cormorant Village, 13 miles south of Lake Park and 1.5 miles north of Zorbaz on Pelican Lake. Twenty-five regional artists will display a wide variety of watercolors, acrylic and oil paintings, rosemaling, pine needle basketry, prints, cards and art gift items. There is no admission charge. The Lake Region Arts Council has announced that it will be presenting three new exhibits in the LRAC Gallery through January 2009. The themes of the new exhibits are: "Rural Scenes," now through July 11; "Abstract Art," July 14-Oct. 11; "Female Form in Art," Oct. 13-Jan. 10, 2009. All exhibits are juried and open to visual artists of all disciplines.

The Family Council of St. Mary's Innovis Health Nursing Center will host its 16th annual Party in the Park on Friday, July 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Holy Rosary Church Parish Center. There will be barbecues, chips, beverages, pie and ice cream for $5 per person, and live entertainment featuring Off the Wall Band, The Front Row and The Ding-A-Lings. There will be raffle tickets (need not be present to win), cookbooks and jewelry for sale. Proceeds from the event are used for projects and programs for St. Mary's Nursing Center residents.

The Heritage Hjemkomst Interpretive Center in Moorhead has teamed up with the North Dakota State University Medieval Society to host the second annual Viking Village, featuring medieval-era arts opportunities to try yourself. The event will take place on Sunday, July 20, rain or shine, from noon to 4 p.m. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and college students, $6 for youth ages 5-17, and free to all HHIC members. Activities and demonstrations planned for the celebration include: Viking Quest, a series of hands-on activities for kids; Viking food; linking chain mail; warp weighted loom;

storytelling; Viking games (nine-man Morris, Kubbe, Dice); live combat demonstrations; live goats; and blacksmithing. Viking refreshments will be available.

On May 1, 1960, Captain Francis Gary Powers was shot down over the Soviet Union while piloting his U2 spy plane sparking one of the most famous international incidents of the Cold War. The latest exhibit at the In Their Own Words (ITOW) Veterans Museum, "Top Secret," which opened May 1 and continues through Oct. 31, includes photographs and artifacts from the Cold War Museum about the U-2 Incident.
