Get ready to shake it!

After a two-year absence, Sara Boeckel is back in town and ready to get people up and dancing.

Boeckel taught at Just for Kix dance studio in Detroit Lakes for 10 years as well as worked with the highs school dance team for five years before moving to Winona for two years. She and her family are back in Detroit Lakes, and she is teaching Zumba classes through community education.

"I really missed teaching," she said of her time away.

While in Winona, she started teaching fitness classes rather than starting a dance studio. She said she enjoys teaching Zumba because "I can relate it to my dance background. Dance steps are dance steps."

During her Zumba classes in Detroit Lakes, Boeckel will show three different levels of workout so any experience level is welcome.

And if you can't get the footwork just right? "You can kind of do your own thing, too."

She promises to keep it basic in the beginning though.

"You don't want to get frustrated," she said. "It's to have fun and not realize you're burning calories."

Boeckel said she'd like to introduce more classes in the future as well including Golden Zumba for those 55 and older and PiYo, which she describes as "pilates and yoga for the person who can't sit still."

She said PiYo includes pilates and yoga moves but leaves out the meditation and breathing exercises that accompany pilates and yoga. It's all mat work done quickly, she said.

Zumba classes started Tuesday, but people are still welcome to still join. Classes are Tuesdays and Thursdays from now until April from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Lincoln Education Center.

Classes are $3 a class/$24 a month. Contact community ed at 847-4418 to sign up. To encourage people to try it out, the first class is free.

"Come see what it is," she said.
