How many sing-alongs have featured the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's Fishin' in the Dark? Chances are you yourself have sung this around the campfire or maybe at a wedding reception. The song is a timeless classic and has brought many a smile to a singer's or listener's face since its release in 1987 and subsequent rise to a No. 1 hit.
The band comes to Shooting Star with three of its founding members: Jimmie Fadden, Jeff Hanna and John McEuen. The fourth member, Bob Carpenter, joined the band in 1977 and has remained with it ever since.
The band got its start out in California in 1966 and generated a following with its combination of folk, country and bluegrass tunes. In 1972 the band made a breakthrough in Nashville with its recording of traditional and standard folk tunes on Will the Circle Be Unbroken.
The record featured several collaborations with famous folk and country superstars. Throughout the 1970s, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band gained a wider audience, but it was in the 1980s when it achieved superstar status with a string of No. 1 hits in the country charts and appearances in the Billboard Top 40.
