No. 2 Detroit Lakes wins close meet against Becker
There's nothing wrong with being pushed, as the Detroit Lakes gymnastics team found out after their narrow 145.85 to 144.875 win in Becker Friday.
The Lakers haven't had many competitive meets, with the majority of them resulting in easy wins, but Friday's victory over Becker was a good primer for the Laker's upcoming meet with Perham inside the Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics facility.
Friday's showdown between the No. 1 Yellowjackets and No. 2 Lakers will be one to watch and a good barometer of what could happen in the Section 8-1A meet.
"The girls have not had a clean meet, yet, where everyone has done well," said DL head coach Jen Whipple. "So the girls have not reached their ceiling and have room for improvement."
The Lakers won three of four events versus Becker, as Amy Crawford won vault with a 9.475, Kristi Hoppert the bars at 9.35 and Jessica Stelter took beam with a 9.4.
Natalie Hoffert was second in all-around with a combined 36.75, behind Becker's Maria Zimmerman, who had a 37.075.
Bre Halbur -- the state runner-up on vault two years ago -- is also nearing being back at 100 percent after taking last season off.
Halbur had a 9.25 on vault Friday and is increasing her skill difficulty and notched an 8.525 on floor, where she is improving steadily each meet.
"That was only Bre's third time on floor, so she's improving there," Whipple said. "And she's trying to work up to her pike on vault and just trying to work on her consistency."
The Lakers and Yellowjackets will kick off at 6 p.m. with junior varsity competition, with varsity starting approximately around 7-7:30 p.m.
