Even though the Detroit Lakes gymnastics team broke out for a season-high score of 148 Friday against rival Perham, which scored a 142.95, there are no plans of that number being tops for the season.

“There’s still room for improvement,” said DL head coach Steve Zamzo. “I think hitting a 149 (the DLHS record) or a 150 is attainable for these girls.

“But what we take out of Friday’s score is we simply scored higher than Perham on that night.”

The Lakers notched season highs vault with a team score of 37.75 and floor with a 37.5.

DL had four gymnasts score a 9.0 or better on vault, led by Molly Lyngaas’ 9.6 and followed by Alexis Yliniemi’s 9.45, Allison Berg’s 9.375 and Emma Disse’s 9.325.

“The girls really just built off that first event,” Zamzo said.

“Having all four scores being a 9.0 or better is the first time that has happened for us this season.”

On bars and beam, the two most challenging events for the Lakers, Lyngaas also took first with a 9.45. Leah Chavez and Disse each recorded a 9.2.

The Lakers had two falls on beam, but still came out on top, as Disse went for a 9.35 and Lyngaas scored a 9.2.

Lyngaas added her third event win on floor with a 9.5, which was tied with Disse’s 9.5.

“Floor was lights out for the girls,” Zamzo said.

“With our lowest score being a 9.1, they really had a good showing.”

But the Lakers and Zamzo will keep their 148 in perspective, since there is lots of season left and Perham had a down meet with their 142.90.

“Friday night, we were just the better team, but we can’t let down,” Zamzo said.

“There are still points out there to get.”

The Lakers, who are ranked No. 4 in the state with an average score of 146.483, will compete in the State True Team meet in Melrose Saturday.
