No. 6 Prowlers halts No. 1 DL’s tourney run

One of the Detroit Lakes’ baseball teams’ most successful seasons in the last several years came to an end with a 9-3 loss to Thief River Falls in Crookston during the Section 8-2A elimination game Tuesday.

The No. 6 seeded Prowlers ended the Lakers’ season, after DL fell to Perham Saturday in the second game of the start of the elimination round portion of the playoffs.

The South’s top-seeded Lakers (16-5) downed Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton in the first tilt Saturday in Perham by the score of 6-2, with sophomore Connor Johnson looking impressive on the mound, tossing a complete-game victory.

The Laker offense gave Johnson a three-run cushion after the bottom of the first inning, when Richie Grossman had an RBI sacrifice fly, while DGF was plagued by two errors.

The ante was upped to 5-0 in the fourth after Nick Groth and Kirk McLeod hit back-to-back RBIs. Groth knocked in Jackson Lyngaas, who reached on a leadoff single, with a double, while McLeod hit a sacrifice fly to left field to bring in Taylor Magnuson, who also singled.

The Rebels were able to break up Johnson’s shutout with a two-run double by Isaiah Greene, but DL padded the lead back to 6-2 with senior shortstop Austin Eiter belting an RBI single to score McLeod, who reached on a single.

Johnson had seven strikeouts and no walks, while allowing eight scattered hits.

Lyngaas went 3-3 from his eighth slot, while Groth was 2-3.

Four errors by the Lakers in game two against the Yellowjackets led to two unearned runs in a 4-1 loss.

Perham had two hits in a three-run first inning, in which they knocked out DL starter A.J. Matter.

But sophomore Ryan Cihak came in for relief and was very effective with his offspeed deliveries, holding the Perham bats to just three hits the rest of the way.

The Lakers only managed one run off of starter Eric Brauch, who scattered out six hits.

Grossman picked up the RBI single in the first inning to knock in Groth, who gained first on a one-out single.

But Brauch was around the strike zone the entire game, recording nine strikeouts and walking just two. Perham didn’t have an error, which helped the cause as well.

Results from the Thief River Falls game were not available at press time. The Prowlers moved on to beat Crookston 2-1 and will face the loser of No. 3 Perham and No. 4 Roseau, with the game to be played Thursday at 2:30 p.m. in Crookston.

The winner of that game will play the winner of Roseau and Perham in the championship game at 5 p.m. Thursday in Crookston.
