Norma Neitzke

Norma J. Neitzke, 78, of Detroit Lakes, died Friday, March 6, 2009, at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo.

Norma Jean Courneya was born to Garnett and Myrtle (Fingalson) Courneya on April 2, 1930 in Detroit Lakes, and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School in 1949. She received a scholarship to attend the Gerrard School of Music in Chicago, Ill. She worked for the Wilcox Lumber Yard in Detroit Lakes. Norma married Dr. Joseph G. Neitzkeon June 9, 1952 in Detroit Lakes. She taught piano lessons for Mathison Music Store. With her mother having died when Norma was 16 years old, she raised her five siblings prior to starting her own family.

Norma was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Catholic Daughters and Christian Mothers. She enjoyed music, reading, athletics, her children's activities, genealogy, cooking, collecting dolls and being with people.

Surviving Norma are her husband, Dr. Joseph Neitzke of Detroit Lakes; children, Gregory (Cindy) Neitzke of Eden Prairie, Minn., Debra Gustafson of St. Paul, Michael Neitzke of Hermosa Beach, Calif., Stephen (Sandy) Neitzke of Detroit Lakes and Barbara (Scott) Johnson of Detroit Lakes; three grandchildren; three brothers, Wayne (Marilyn) Courneya of Minneapolis, Curtis (Shirley) Courneya of Fridley, Minn., and Bob Courneya of Minneapolis; a sister, Janice (David) Mickelson of Frazee; and a brother-in-law, Howard Westlie of Detroit Lakes.

Preceding her in death were an infant child and a sister, Bette Westlie.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 10, with a Catholic Daughters/Christian Mothers rosary at 6:30 p.m. and parish vigil at 7 p.m., all in Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Detroit Lakes.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Wednesday, March 11 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, with the Rev. Jerry Rogers officiating. The David-Donehower Funeral Home in Detroit Lakes is serving the family. Online guest registration is available at
