Norman A. "Bud" Refsland, 82, of Vergas, died Thursday, May 8, 2008 at St. Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes.
Norman Ardell Refsland, known as Bud, was born to George and Thea (Helgeson) Refsland on July 30, 1925 in Renville, Minn. He was raised and educated near Sacred Heart, Minn. He served with the U.S. Army from February 1945 to December 1946, spending most of his time in Okinowa. Following his discharge, he lived briefly in the Twin Cities prior to returning to rural Sacred Heart. Bud married Marvolyn Butenhoff on March 7, 1948 near Renville. They farmed near Danube, Minn., until 1975. Bud then worked for the Southern Minnesota Sugar Beet Plant in Renville for several years. They moved to Lake Lida, near Vergas, where they operated Refsland's North Shore Resort, 1981-94. They moved into Vergas in 1994.
Bud enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Surviving Bud are his wife, Marvolyn Refsland of Vergas; sons, Bradly Refsland (Rosemary McGuire) of Detroit Lakes, Steven (Marilyn) Refsland of Carbondale, Colo., Gene Refsland of Glenwood, Colo., and Dale (Cheryl) Refsland of Park Rapids; a daughter, Karen (Mark) Neu of Pelican Rapids; 14 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and a sister, Marilyn (Harry) Zimmer of Raymond, Minn.
Preceding Bud in death were a grandson, Derek Refsland; his parents; and a brother, Gordon.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday, May 12 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Loon Lake, near Vergas, with the Rev. Robert Hinckley officiating. Interment will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call for one hour prior to the start of services at the church on Monday.
