North Dakota Catholics mail 30,000 post cards in opposition of Freedom of Choice Act
Catholics in eastern North Dakota mailed more than 30,000 postcards to U.S. Senators Kent Conrad and Byron Dorgan, and Representative Earl Pomeroy, urging them to oppose the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) "or any similar measure, and retain laws against federal funding and promotion of abortion," Rachelle Sauvageau, director of the Diocese of Fargo Respect Life Office, said in a press release from the diocese.
Sauvageau said 31,359 postcards were mailed from 96 parishes in the diocese, which encompasses the eastern half of North Dakota, the release stated.
"Additional postcards were mailed directly from parishioners after being distributed in all 133 churches of the diocese in late January," Sauvageau said in the release.
If enacted FOCA would codify Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court case on abortion, declaring abortion a fundamental right. FOCA would also remove federal and state restrictions on abortion.
