North Washington Books Etc. opens in Detroit Lakes
Book lovers in Detroit Lakes have a new option to increase their collections as North Washington Books Etc. opened last month.
Janet Syrup, a Detroit Lakes native, opened the shop as a way to decrease her immense collection.
"I keep buying more books and my house is full of books," she said. "I have so many books, so I thought I should open up a bookstore."
The books are all used, with something for everyone. There are classics, mysteries, Westerns, non-fiction and children's titles.
"We have a lot of Westerns," Syrup said.
One tough item to stock is history books.
"They aren't easy to find," she said.
She also sells sheet music and vinyl records.
"Some people say vinyl is the best."
The back wall of the store is wallpapered using sheet music.
Syrup has been selling books for nearly 20 years at Shady Hollow Flea Market south of Detroit Lakes. And she's online with stores on eBay and Amazon.
"It's not a lot," Syrup said of her online offerings. "Only about 1,000."
The store can be considered a general bookstore, she said, but she does have her favorites.
"My favorites are the really old books. I enjoy the bindings, the feel of an old book. The smell of it and the paper. I just love old books."
While new books can be bought rather cheaply, used books still make for a good bargain. Some books that Syrup sells look as good as new.
"Many books look like new and probably have never been read," she said. "I know there are books that I've purchased and was going to read, but I haven't read them and decided to sell them."
For now, the store hours are limited as it's only open Thursday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Syrup commutes from Moorhead.
In the spring, she said she hopes to have the store open throughout the week.
"I don't like to drive in the wintertime," Syrup said.
North Washington Books Etc. is located at 515 Washington Ave.
