Northwest Water Carnival gets underway Friday
The 79th annual Northwest Water Carnival is right around the corner, with opening festivities set to take place this Friday, July 11.
In line with tradition, the water carnival officially kicks off with the Miss Northwest Pageant, which starts at 7 p.m. at the DLCCC’s Historic Holmes Theatre.
New to the NWC this year is the Veterans’ Service Dog Golf tournament, which starts at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Lakeview Executive. This is also the site of Night Golf, which gets underway at 9 p.m.
Up and at ‘em bright and early Saturday for the Detroit Lakes Mid-summer Bike Tour, which goes from 7-9 a.m. beginning at the DL Pavilion.
The Detroit Lakes Fly-In & Pancake Breakfast runs from 7:30 to 11:30 at the Detriot Lakes-Becker County Airport.
Other Saturday events include geocaching, starting at 9 a.m. outside the Pavilion, a "Ride for the Future" motorcycle run embarking at 9 a.m. from the DL City Park parking lot, Rotate the Lake Bar Hop from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Beast on the Beach strong man competition starting at noon on the beach in front of the Pavilion. The day concludes with the Demolition Derby at 6 p.m. inside the grandstand at the Becker County Fairgrounds.
Sunday is Family Fun Day, with a host of family-friendly events including a picnic, shipbuilding and sand castle building contests, frog jump and turtle racing competitions, a "Pup Plunge," "Toddler Trot" and watermelon feed, just to name a few of the plethora of activities planned.
