Nuggets use free throws to down Lady Hornets
Free throws were the name of the game as the Hawley Nuggets went 20-29 from the foul line Tuesday night, while the Lady Hornets only went 8-13 to key a Nugget 51-40 victory.
"The difference was at the line and we definitely fouled them," said Frazee head coach Tim Swenson. "We need to do a better job defensively."
The first half was a tough battle, with the Nuggets holding a slim 23-18 lead going into the locker room.
Erica Amann had eight of her 12 points in the first half, hitting three mid-range jumpers.
"Amann was a big key in the first half," Swenson said. "She hit some key buckets for them."
Senior Abby Berven had 10 of her team high 13 points in the first half.
The second half started with the Nuggets going box and one on Berven and scoring some early shots.
"They went to the box and we didn't make the shots we had, we had some nice looks but they just wouldn't fall," the Frazee coach said.
While the Lady Hornets struggled from the field, the Nuggets didn't and opened up a nice double-digit lead.
"We again tried to fight back but the runs have done us in," Swenson said.
The Nuggets improve to 6-3 overall with Allie Sannes leading the way with 14 points, while Amann added 12 in the winning effort.
The Lady Hornets were led by Berven with 13 points and five rebounds while eighth grader.
Alexis Tappe played for the first time this year due to a wrist injury added 11 off the bench.
"I thought we made improvements and that will help down the road," Swenson concluded.
Frazee dropped to 4-5 overall and 3-3 in the HOL.
