Back this year are the favorite events like the chili cookoff, the sand castle contest, and of course the Parade of the Northwest, which is on Sunday.

Some other events include:

Midsummer Bike Tour

The Detroit Lakes Midsummer Bike Tour gives bike riders a chance to ride near the lakes on a 13-, 26- or 43-mile course.

The bike tour is on Saturday, July 14, as part of the Northwest Water Carnival festivities.

Registration and check-in starts at the DL Pavilion at 6:30 a.m., rides can begin from 7 to 9 a.m.

The route may be completed individually ($15 registration fee) or as a family ($50 for up to five participants).

There's also a Kid's Ride offered, at 1K or 5K, with a $5 registration fee. The Kid's Ride starts at 10 a.m.

There are water and food stops along the routes, and each participant gets a free T-shirt.

Proceeds from the ride go to the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center for youth and adult fitness programs.

Fly-In

The Water Carnival is a wonderful opportunity for a fly-in -- for people to view the display of aircraft, antique cars, static display of older aircraft and many exhibitors and more.

Fly-In pilots receive a gift, free pancake breakfast and the opportunity to win an iPad2 or Bose A20 headset. The fly-in is scheduled for July 14.

Demolition Derby

The Demo Derby is scheduled for July 14 at 6 p.m. at the fairgrounds, gates open at 5 p.m.
