Live music at Zorbaz

Zorbaz Restaurant, located across the street from the city beach on West Lake Drive, will host a performance by Acoustic Addiction.

Live at the Lodge

The Lodge on Lake Detroit continues its Live at the Lodge concert series with a performance by the jazz duo of Dave Ferreira (piano/vocals) and Russ Peterson (saxophone) at 7 p.m. There is no cover charge; the event is open to hotel guests and the public.

Jasper's Theater

Come for music, magic and comedy at Jasper's Theater, Park Rapids. Starting today, there are shows every Thursday at 3 p.m. throughout July and August. There is a magic pre-show 15 minutes prior to each performance. For more info, call 218-237-4333 or visit

Miss Northwest Pageant

Six young women from northwestern Minnesota, ages 18 to 20, will vie for the title of Miss Northwest. The winner will represent the Northwest Region in the Miss Minnesota Pageant in June of 2009 and have the opportunity to win additional scholarship money. The pageant, which is the kickoff for the 73rd annual Northwest Water Carnival, begins at 7 p.m. in the Holmes Theatre.

Saturday, July 12

Midsummer Bike Tour

Grab your family and friends and take a tour through the beautiful lakes area! Participants can choose a 15-mile family ride, 30-mile loop or 45-mile loop. You can start out from the DL Pavilion anytime between 7:30-9:30 a.m. Cost of registration is $20 (after July 4). For more info, contact Kim Bettcher at 218-844-4221 ext. 108.

Water Carnival Swim

Register at the DL Pavilion and swim for a half-mile or full mile, your choice. The Lake Swim will be divided into age and gender categories and includes a towel with your entry fee. Registration is $12 in advance at the Northwest Water Carnival Web site ( or $15 the day of the event. Start time is 8 a.m. For more info, contact Kim Bettcher at 847-5170.

Demolition Derby

The Water Carnival Demolition Derby is the best of its kind in this part of the state. Catch the entire car crushing action at the Becker County Fairgrounds starting at 6 p.m. The derby features 4-cylinder and stock cars as well as trucks. The competition is limited to the first 50 entrants that are registered and paid. Multiple concessions and a Northwest Water Carnival beer garden will be open and ready to serve the crowds. Gates open at 5 p.m.

Family Jam

The fifth annual Family Jam, "Concert and Fun in the Light of the Son,"?is scheduled to take place from noon to 8:30 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes City Park, near the DL Pavilion. Enjoy free musical performances from regional and nationally known entertainers including Warren Barfield, Triad 4 Christ, Freedom's Call (from Bemidji), world-renowned speaker Morris Goodman, also known as the "Miracle Man," and famed illusionist Brock Gill. NWC Junior Pageant

The Northwest Water Carnival Junior Pageant gets underway at 6 p.m. in the DL Pavilion. This year's theme is "Just Beachy." Children entered in the pageant may dress according to the theme, but it isn't required; parents should dress their child in whatever is most comfortable, as the Pavilion is not climate-controlled. Contestants should arrive at least 15 minutes early.

NWC Talent Show

Individuals and groups are welcome to compete for the honor of being the Northwest Water Carnival's Top Talent. This event will consist of vocal and non-vocal categories for all ages. Entry forms are available on the website and must be turned into the Chamber office by Thursday, July 10. Participation fee is $10 per individual and $15 per group. NWC Open Swim Meet

Challenge your family and friends at the BTD Aquatics Center (in the Community Center) for this exciting chance to see who the "Big Fish" really is. Show off your swimming skills in a variety of swimming events from 4 to 6 p.m. Every participant receives a ribbon. Cost for entry is $5 and registration will take place at the event. NWC Water Fights

This signature Northwest Water Carnival event gets underway at 7 p.m. in the DL City Park. Sign up your team at 6:30 p.m. and prepare for the watery battle. Use a fire hose to compete against other teams moving a ball on a wire 10 feet above the ground. Teams consist of local firefighters, businesses and community groups. There will be separate men's and women's divisions, and it is a single elimination event. For more information, contact Jon Olson at 218-234-8680.
