NYM City Council passes golf cart ordinance
The City Council finalized an ordinance Tuesday authorizing the use of golf carts on city streets.
Those looking to operate a golf cart in city limits must first obtain a permit from the city office. Permits are $10 and expire on Dec. 31 of the year in which the permit was issued.
A permit may be revoked at any time or denied if it is shown the permittee cannot safely operate motorized golf carts on designated routes, or if the permittee has had a valid driver's license revoked for traffic violations.
Golf carts are permitted to operate on all city streets and alleys within the city limits. They cannot operate on federal, state or county highways, other than to cross in city limits.
Operation of motorized golf carts on city streets are subject to the following conditions:
-- They may only be operated on designated roadways from sunrise to sunset.
-- They can't be operated in inclement weather or when visibility is impaired by weather, smoke, fog, or other conditions, or at any time when there is insufficient light to clearly see persons and vehicles on the roadway at a distance of 500 feet.
-- Motorized golf carts shall display the slow moving vehicle emblem.
-- Every person operating a motorized golf cart on designated roadways has all the rights and duties applicable to the driver of any other vehicle under state statute.
-- City ordinances regulating parking and traffic will apply to persons operating a motorized golf cart on designated roadways.
