Saturday, May 16 is Family Forestry Day at the Bob Sonnenberg farm in New York Mills.

Running from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., this family event is for anyone interested in trees, whether on a couple of odd acres on the farm or in a hundred-acre woodland.

Continuous events will include guided tours on tractor-drawn people movers with stops at a pasture being converted to oak woods, evergreen plantings, and established woods being maintained for high quality timber.

The event will feature all the equipment needed to support a single person's complete forestry operation, from planting to marketing.

Equipment to be demonstrated will include a portable sawmill, automatic wood splitter and heavy-duty brush cutter.

Field seminars will feature growing Shitake mushrooms, tree and brush identification, control measures for buckthorn and other invasive species, plus chainsaw safety and maintenance.

For young people, two Project Learning Tree sessions will be held, one in the morning and another in the afternoon.

The Sonnenberg farm is located one mile north of New York Mills on County Highway 67.

This event is sponsored by the Minnesota Forestry Association, an organization for private woodland owners.

Admission is just $10 per carload. More information is available online at or by calling 218-495-3321.
