NYM to host two celebrations Aug. 12
New York Mills will be a busy place on Friday, Aug. 12 with both the annual Corn Feed and Puppet Pageant taking place.
Sponsored by the New York Mills Civic & Commerce Association, the Corn Feed runs from 4-7 p.m. at the Central Park shelter.
The feed is free, and is the C&C's way of thanking the community for its involvement and support of local businesses throughout the year.
The sweet corn is picked fresh Friday morning and a full pick-up load is hauled to town, where volunteers gather at noon to shuck in time for the feed in the evening.
Along with free corn for everybody, food vendors will be selling a variety of goods in Central Park. A craft fair will also run from noon to 7 p.m., with vendors setting up in Central Park, as well as other downtown locations.
A pie and ice cream social, along with pulled pork sandwiches, will be served by the NY Mills Senior Center. Mills Lanes and Lucky Strike Grill will serve pork chops on a stick, the NY Mills VFW Post 3289 Ladies Auxiliary will serve fry bread and Bandwagon will serve beverages.
Kids activities include a bounce house from 3-7 p.m. in the park and a free swim at the Legried Community Pool from 1-5 p.m.
A carwash by the New York Mills Fire Department is scheduled for 4-7 p.m. Mills Liquors will also be selling beer outside from 4-7 p.m.
The New York Mills Regional Cultural Center will also present its Puppet Pageant that evening at 6 p.m., featuring stories from the Kalevala.
The Kalevala is a book and epic poem, which Elias Lönnrot compiled from Finnish and Karelian folklore in the nineteenth century.
It is held to be the national epic of Finland and is traditionally thought of as one of the most significant works of Finnish literature.
The Kalevala is credited with helping to inspire the national awakening that ultimately led to Finland's independence from Russia in 1917.
Large-scale puppets will walk Centennial Drive in Mills enacting a drama inspired by the first 10 runes to the Kalevala.
