Orin D. Meltz, 85, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, May 2, 2010 at Oak Crossing in Detroit Lakes, surrounded by his loved ones.
Friends may call from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, May 6 and 10 to 11 a.m. Friday, May 7 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home. Funeral services will take place at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home, with interment following in Oak Grove Cemetery. Military rites will be provided by the Lake Region Honor Guard.
Orin Dean Meltz was born to Edward and Alsie Meltz on January 6, 1925 in Sparta, Wis., where he was raised and educated. Orin served with the U.S. military in World War II. He was united in marriage to Lillian Cork in 1949 in Thief River Falls, where they made their home. They later divorced.
Orin was united in marriage to Helen Syvertson in Detroit Lakes in 1963. He worked as a cook for many years and then worked for the Red Owl Store in Detroit Lakes until retiring. Helen died in 2005.
Orin enjoyed cooking, gardening, activities at the VFW and visiting with his family and friends.
Survivors include a daughter, Vyann (Doug) Grant of Battle Creek, Mich.; a son, Dale Scott Meltz of Superior, Wis.; a stepdaughter, Dorothy (Elvin) Block of Detroit Lakes; a stepson, Don (Bea) Syvertson of Lake Park; 12 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and two great-great grand-children.
In addition to his wife, Helen, he was preceded in death by a stepson, Gordon Syvertson; three brothers, Jason, Leonard and Willard; and a sister, Alice.
