P-To-P Super Seniors - Renner dominates
Besides one glitch showing up on Chuck Renner's Pine to Palm Super Senior's resumé, the three-year-old division has literally belonged to the soft-spoken golfer from Phoenix, Ariz.
That one glitch came in the inaugural year of the Super Seniors, as Renner was defeated by Detroit Lakes' Paul Krueger in the championship match.
Since then, Renner has won all three medalist honors.
Now add the last two Super Seniors championships to his domination list.
Renner exacted revenge on Krueger Sunday by winning 4 and 3 to complete his back-to-back medalist-championship sweep at the Detroit Country Club.
"It is totally unexpected," Renner said of his dominating success in the Super Seniors. "All I was trying to accomplish was my two goals, which is make good decisions and good swings."
Renner accomplished both consistently and he successfully made a calculated gamble early in the week and won.
After earning the right to forgo qualifying by winning the 2011 Super Seniors championship, he decided to go for the medalist three-peat instead.
Renner won the medalist honors by shooting a one-under par 70, then proceeded to make his way through bracket play with a 3 and 2 win over Dr. Rick Render (his 2011 championship opponent), a 2-up victory over Conrad Lopes and a win over two-time Seniors champion Joe Mayer in the semifinals.
Renner started early in his championship match with Krueger, by placing his wedge shot from about 89 yards out to within six feet of the cup on hole two.
Things continued well for Renner and by hole 12, he had a 6-up advantage.
"Paul wasn't his usual self," Renner said. "It wasn't the usual Paul Krueger kind of round and I just happened to be playing extremely well."
Krueger was able to make birdies on 13 and 14 to cut into the deficit, but Renner finished off the DL golfer by hole 16.
"I shot 2-under, so this is one of the best rounds I've played in a while," Renner said. "It's nice to accomplish my goals, although it's quite unexpected."
