Panthers sweep DL baseball

Two solid pitching performances by the Detroit Lakes baseball team went for naught, as Park Rapids posted a Mid-State Conference sweep of the Lakers Tuesday by the scores of 3-1 and 11-6.

Despite junior Connor Johnson pitching a two-hitter, walking one and striking out nine, the Lakers gave up three unearned runs in a 3-1 loss.

In the nightcap, senior Sam Voz pitched 4.2 innings, struck out seven, walked three, but five DL errors led to six unearned runs in the 11-6 defeat.

“We had a lot of inexperienced errors and mistakes,” said DL head coach Steve Fuhs. “We still have many first-time varsity players and it’s showing.”

Johnson pitched well in game one, but back-to-back errors in the second inning led to two unearned runs, while an error in the third resulted in the Panthers’ third tally.

DL’s bats were just as inconsistent, with leadoff batter junior Ryan Cihak going 3-4 and junior catcher Sam Beck going 2-3, but the Lakers from there, collected just three more hits.

“The bats were inconsistent,” Fuhs said.

Beck scored DL’s lone run after lacing a two-out double in the fourth inning, with Boyd Bradbury following up with an RBI single.

A six-run third inning in game two wasn’t enough for DL, as the Panthers scored three in the second and four in the third to regain the lead 7-6.

They added a run in each the fourth and fifth, while posting two more insurance runs in the sixth.

Cooper Heimark went 2-3, while six other Lakers had single hits.

“Sam (Voz) pitched strikes, we just didn’t catch the ball behind him,” Fuhs said.

The Lakers will host Staples-Motley Thursday for a Mid-State Conference doubleheader, starting at 4 p.m.
