The host squad nipped DL 4-3, with all but two matches being fairly close.

The Lakers were victorious in two doubles and one singles match, while losing three close singles matches.

At No. 1 doubles, seniors Alex Nustad and Ben VanOffelen downed juniors Ted Tiffany and Ryan Kent in a pair of close sets, winning 7-6, 6-4.

"Alex and Ben played a gutsy match," said DL head coach Jim Hinson. "Their match was quite long, even though it was only two sets. Both teams had lots of good points."

Senior Ryan Borgeson played a two and a half hour marathon match at No. 1 singles, finally coming out on top of senior Mark Smith in three sets. Borgeson had to rally, down one set after losing the first 6-3.

He recovered with a 6-2 win and moved on to win the decisive set 6-3.

"Ryan has been playing well in his last three matches," Hinson said. "This one was especially sweet in that he came back tough and consistent after losing the opening set.

"I was very happy how Ryan held onto his composure and focus against a tough opponent."

The Lakers' third win came at No. 2 doubles, where senior Eric Roethel and freshman Jake Hartman swept through the Park Rapids' duo of Kurt Leadbetter and Mike Atneosen 6-1, 6-2.

The win gives the DL duo a 3-1 record.

"Eric and Jake played yet another excellent doubles match with a convincing win," Hinson said.

Freshman Jesse Meyer lost to Alex Renner at No. 2 singles in two highly-contested sets, but the Laker lost both 6-3, 7-6.

"Even though Renner had a little bit of an edge in quickness, Jesse pushed him hard and I was very pleased with his effort," Hinson said.

Jerry Walden and Brett Montplaisir each lost in straight sets in No 3 and 4 singles action, respectively.

The Lakers are now 1-1 in the Mid-State, after rainouts in their last three conference meets.

DL competed in the Mid-State Conference meet Friday (results will be in Wednesday's Becker County Record) and will play at Perham Thursday for a 2 p.m. start.

The section meet will start Tuesday, May 20.
