Park Rapids will escape blizzard conditions, but not cold

PARK RAPIDS - Park Rapids is in for a bone-chilling week but will escape today's blizzard conditions because of its surrounding forests.

"You'll get around 2 to 2½ inches of snow," predicted National Weather Service meteorologist Geoffrey Grochocinski. "The winds will pick up today bringing in colder air from Canada. You'll see some blowing snow, but not the blizzard conditions we've forecast for the upper Red River Valley. Your tree cover will shelter you."

Grochowcinski said Wednesday will bring a day of "bad wind chills," nearing 50 below zero. As winds pick up throughout the early part of the week, wind chills will continue to slide downward. Here is the extended forecast:

Today: Snow and wide-spread blowing snow, mainly before noon. Temperature falling to around -3 by 5pm. Wind chill values as low as -25. Blustery, with a north northwest wind 7 to 10 mph increasing to between 17 and 20 mph. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around -27. Wind chill values as low as -42. Blustery, with a north northwest wind 17 to 20 mph decreasing to between 6 and 9 mph. Winds could gust as high as 28 mph.

Tuesday: Partly sunny and cold, with a high near -6. Wind chill values as low as -42. Northwest wind at 7 mph becoming south southeast.

Tuesday night: Snow likely, mainly after mid-night. Cloudy, with a low around -16. Wind chill values as low as -32. South southeast wind 7 to 9 mph becoming northeast. Chance of precipitation is 60%.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near -3. North northwest wind be-tween 7 and 9 mph.

Wednesday night: Mostly clear, with a low around -24.

Thursday: Sunny and cold, with a high near -9.

Thursday night: Partly cloudy, with a low around -22.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near -2.

Friday night: A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a low around -12.

Saturday: A slight chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 10.
