The grip on the Mid-State Conference was lost by the Detroit Lakes softball team, after suffering a home sweep at the hands of Pequot Lakes Tuesday by the scores of 9-5 and 6-2.

The two victories almost ensured a Patriot conference championship with an 8-0 Mid-State record, while the Lakers fell to 5-3.

“We knew we were going to have to play our best against a team like Pequot Lakes,” said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. “But we made a few errors and didn’t come up with the clutch hits.”

The Lakers stranded nine runners in game one, with eight of them in scoring position, after collecting nine hits off of talented pitcher Katie White.

Laker pitcher Chaz Butz pitched well, giving up eight hits, but a big one came in the sixth inning on a Hailey Wiebolt three-run homer to put the Pats (8-3) up 7-3.

“Chaz just made a couple bad choices pitching, otherwise she pitched well,” Kirchner included.

Laker freshman centerfielder Maycen Kirchner had a solid game, making a diving catch to rob a double, while smacking her first homer of the season to lead off the fifth inning.

She was one of three Lakers with two hits, which also included leadoff hitter Carolyn Kirchner and third baseman Kyra Vagle.

Freshman Emily Schiltz put the Lakers on top 2-0 with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first inning in game two, but DL was blanked from then on and advanced just one runner past first base.

Pequot Lakes took advantage of two DL errors in a four-run fourth for the 6-2 win.

DL was held to five hits, while the Patriots collected eight off of Butz.

The Lakers started the week with a 12-2 win over visiting Waubun at Snappy Park Monday.

DL collected 14 hits, with Maycen Kirchner going 3-3 with an RBI and senior slugger Brooke Olson going 2-4 with three RBIs.

Each of Kinney, Vagle and Llecenia Burnside had two hits.

Butz tossed a four-hitter, struck out six and walked two.

The Lakers will be at Staples-Motley Friday for a conference doubleheader, starting at 3 p.m.
