PCA grant will help WE Fest, 10KLF go green
Detroit Lakes Minnesota 511 Washington Avenue 56501

FACE, Inc., producers of the WE Fest and 10,000 Lakes Festival, have been awarded a $75,000 grant from the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency to increase recycling at special events held in Soo Pass Ranch. The MPCA funds will be used to develop WE B Green, a comprehensive recycling program that will significantly reduce the amount of landfill waste generated by business operations, as well as vendors and campers at WE Fest and 10KLF.

The WB B Green plan includes 15 manned recycling stations throughout the concert bowl and campgrounds, coupled with "roadside" collection of recycled material in the campgrounds and vending areas.

The goal of this program is to reduce the amount of solid waste from Soo Pass events by 50 percent within four years, including an immediate reduction of 14 percent in 2008.

In addition to precycling methods, an effective recycling program can reduce direct costs through lower waste disposal fees, lower county and state taxes on landfill waste. In some cases, the costs of recycling can be offset by sales of recycled material.
