Pelican Rapids' 11th annual Oktoberfest celebration starts this Thursday
Plans are underway in Pelican Rapids for the 11th Annual Oktoberfest Celebration, Oct. 9-12.
This year again promises to be filled with fun and exciting events. There will be dances, food, music, walks, runs, bingo, an auction, wine tasting and silent auction, sausage contest and beer tasting, raffle, kids bingo, contests, beer garden, bonfire, street sales and so much more.
Events begin on Thursday, Oct. 9, with an open house at the Pelican Rapids Fire Department from 4 to 7 p.m.
The crowning of Mr. and Mrs. Oktoberfest 2008 will be held at 7 p.m. at the Fire Hall. Birchwood Golf Course will be hosting a wine tasting and silent auction from 5 to 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Riverview Place, Pelican Drug, Pelican Rapids Liquor Store and Nelstrom's Flooring.
The V.F.W. Auxiliary will have bingo at 6:30 p.m and again on Saturday, Oct. 11, at 2 p.m.
Maplewood Veterinary and Animal hospital will be holding an aluminum can drive on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Oct. 9-11, as a fundraiser for the Ottertail County Humane Society. They will also be accepting monetary donations, pet food, kitty litter, kennels, toys etc.
The Pelican Rapids Jaycees will be having a bonfire, beer garden and musical entertainment beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 10, in the parking lot below the library. Karaoke will be held at the V.F.W. at 8 p.m.
Take a scenic drive and enjoy the beautiful fall leaves on the way out to Lida Greens Golf Course, located on Highway 108 east, where a Volksmarch will be held from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11-12. The 5k and 10k races begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday. There will also be an open mike jam session from noon to 4 p.m. at The Loft at Lida Greens on Saturday.
Saturday evening the exciting events all take place at The V.F.W., located on Highway 108 West. An auction, with hundreds of donated items, begins at 6 p.m. Following the auction stay and dance to "October Road."
An old-fashioned Sunday afternoon polka party will be held on Sunday, Oct. 12, at the Pelican Rapids V.F.W. A German-American dinner will be served from noon to 5 p.m. "Odell Braten" will be on stage from 1 to 5 p.m. The polka contest begins at 3 p.m., with special guests Marv and Betty Bossart assisting with judging.
The "Best of the Wurst" Sausage and Beer Sampling and "Oktoburger" hamburger eating contest will begin at 2 p.m. at Crossroads Corner.
When you purchase an Oktoberfest button, your name will go in for two grand prize drawings of $100 each in Pelican Bucks, which will be drawn at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 12. For a complete schedule of events go to
