Pelican Rapids survived a late run by the Lady Hornets to claim their first victory of the season, while dropping the Lady Hornets to 3-2.

"Give Pelican credit, they played like they wanted to win more than we did for the first 31 minutes of the game," said Frazee head coach Tim Swenson.

The first half was a back and forth game as both teams would grab the lead only to give it away again.

Frazee turned it over 11 times, while the Lady Vikings had 10 turnovers in the first half as both teams struggled getting into any flow.

"We just never got the running game going and our offense was not effective against the Pelican defense," Swenson included.

The first half ended with the Lady Vikings holding a 25-22 lead.

Freshman Erika Morgan led the young Vikings with 10 of her team high 15 in the first half.

The second half started with more of the same from the Lady Hornets as they came out of the locker room sloppy with the ball and the Lady Vikings took advantage of the that to open up a 38-26 lead.

"We came out to start the second half and it was more of the same, we just couldn't find that spark to get us going," the Frazee coach commented.

After a bucket by senior Abby Berven made it 38-28, the Lady Vikings scored the next four points to open up their biggest lead of the night at 42-28.

Seniors Chelsea Nordquist and Kayla Smith each scored to cut the lead back to 10 for the Lady Vikings, but Morgan responded with a big three bumping the lead back to 13 with 4:50 to go.

"That was a big shot as she banked it in, we just started to play with some urgency and the freshman banks in that three," Swenson said.

The Lady Hornets came back with a three of their own by Berven, but that was followed by one free throw by senior Haley Hoyer to give the Lady Vikings a 46-35 lead.

Berven scored the next seven points, including an old-fashioned three point play off a nice pass by Nordquist to bring the Lady Hornets within four at 46-42.

Sophomore Kristin Haugen slowed the comeback a little with a free throw to give the Lady Vikings a 47-42 lead with under a minute to go.

Nordquist hit two free throws to make it 47-44 with 30 seconds to go.

Frazee fouled Hoyer who missed both free throws and after freshman McKinzie Tangen collected the rebound the Lady Hornets had a chance to tie.

Out of a timeout, Frazee got the shot they were looking for when Berven came open for a three, but it wasn't meant to be as the Lady Vikings held on for the win.

The Lady Hornets were led by Berven with 18 points, while Nordquist had 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Lady Vikings were led by Morgan with 15 points. Hoyer had 10, while Haugen chipped in nine points.

The Lady Hornets travel to Sauk Centre on the Dec. 29-30, for a Christmas Tourney.
