Pelican Rapids nips Lakers in tennis quarters
It came literally down to the last points of the match before the Park Rapids boys' tennis team was able to outlast a charging Detroit Lakes squad in the Section 8-1A quarterfinals Tuesday.
The Panthers won out in the second doubles match to clinch the quarterfinal match 4-3, despite the Lakers playing their best overall meet of the season.
"Today was our best team effort of the year," said DL head coach Jim Hinson. "Every match had great points and playmaking by both teams."
The Panthers' Kyle Dickinson and James Kujawa were able to produce a 6-0 third-set victory over DL's Tim Fouquette and Mike Bogda in the second doubles match, thus breaking a 3-3 tie.
The Lakers captured two singles matches, with junior Tanner Duncan and eighth grader Ethan VanOffelen taking their respected matches.
Duncan downed Scott Smith in straight sets 6-3 and 6-1 at No. 3, while VanOffelen took the fourth singles in three sets over Taylor Kimball 6-4, 2-6 and 6-1.
"Tanner Duncan played very consistent and won going away," Hinson said. "Ethan struggled a bit in the first two sets. He was a little tentative with his shots. In the third set, however, he picked it up a notch and became bold in his shots as he cruised to the win."
The Lakers also took the No. 1 doubles match, with juniors Mike Hartman and Chad Hanson combining for a 6-2 and 7-5 win over Kirt Leadbetter and Steve Smith.
The Lakers will continue to play in the section individual tournament starting next Wednesday in Perham.
Duncan and sophomore Levi Nordine will play in the singles tournament, while the doubles teams of Hartman/Hanson and sophomore Jesse Meyer and eighth grader Isaac Fondrick will represent the Lakers in doubles.
