Percy L. Vilas, age 57, journeyed to the Spirit World on Sunday, April 17, 2011 in Brainerd.
Percy, a member of White Earth band of Ojibwa, was born the son of Robert Vilas Sr. and Maggie Stone on December 24, 1953 in White Earth. He honorably served his country in the United States Marines.
Percy lived in Ponsford, and after he returned from the Marines he lived in Minneapolis and then moved to White Earth for the last couple of years. He was employed as an auto mechanic and he was a good one!
Percy enjoyed going to the casino, playing cribbage, bingo, listening to country western music, being a chaffeur, visiting friends and loved ones.
Surviving Percy are his significant other, Inez Hart of Brainerd; sons, Robert Butcher and Percy French of Ponsford; daughters, Kiaria Pacheco of North Oaks, Minn., and Laureen French of Minneapolis; eight grandchildren; brothers, Eugene R. Stone Sr. and Robert W. Vilas Jr.; sisters, Vienna Gordon, Jeannie Hill, Violt Vilas and Toni Vilas; other relatives and friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Robert W. Vilas Sr. and Maggie Stone Vilas; a brother, Rodney Vilas; and a sister, Yvette Brinkley.
A mass of Christian burial for Percy Vilas will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 26 in St. Theodore Catholic Church, Ponsford. Interment will follow at St. Theodore Cemetery in Ponsford.
An all night wake will begin at 7 p.m. Monday, April 25 in the Pine Point School.
Honorary Casket Bearers will be Gary Jackson, Gene Rock, Brian Tibbits, Paul Benjamin, Robert Percy, Roger Dorr, Bob Johnson, Melvin Goodman, Ralph Goodman and Louie Warren.
Casket Bearers will be Leroy Gordon, Robert Vilas III, Kevin Hill, Darrell Vilas, Donald Blackhawk and Rodney Vilas.
The Chilson Funeral Home in Winsted, Minn. is serving the family.
