Perham dribbles past Lady Hornets
The Perham Yellowjackets used a strong first half defensive effort to help them to a 53-42 victory over the Frazee Lady Hornets Tuesday night in Heart O’Lakes conference girls’ basketball action in Frazee.
Perham (5-7 overall, 2-2 HOL) put the clamps down on Frazee (6-5 overall, 1-3 HOL) in the first half holding the Lady Hornets to only four made goals and 14% from the floor. The Yellowjackets led at half 25-11.
Frazee came out aggressive in the second half scoring the first six points to cut the lead but Perham had an answer for every run that the Lady Hornets tried to make on this night.
“I give all the credit to Perham as they came out and forced us into tough shots in the first half,” head coach Dave Conzemius said. “Then we started settling for poor shots too early in our offense and that led to the halftime deficit.
A big blow came with nine minutes left in the first half when Frazee’s leading rebounder and second leading scorer Kennady Barlund rolled her ankle and never returned.
“It was definitely a big loss for us when Barlund went down,” Conzemius said. “But I was very proud of how we played without her in the second half. We could have rolled over, but instead we played much more aggressively in the second half and really competed well. Perham just had an answer every time we made a run.”
Josi Tappe led Frazee 19 points and six rebounds and five steals. Taylor Tappe chipped in with 14 points and seven rebounds.
Ella Von Ruden led Perham with 19 points.
Frazee is back in action Friday when they host Hawley.
