Perham nips Laker girl swimmers in final event
Despite narrowly losing to Perham Tuesday evening on the last event of the duel meet inside the BTD Aquatics Center, the Detroit Lakes swimming and diving team really didn't have much left to leave in the pool.
Personal best times and plenty of seconds sliced off season-best performances highlighted the Laker's' meet, as Perham won 86-84, keyed by a win in the 400-yard relay event.
"We had a lot of good times and Perham is a solid team," said DL head coach Carol McCarthy. "We were missing some numbers for the meet, but I thought our kids did an awesome job. A lot of the younger swimmers had to compete in events they never swam before, and they did a good job in those, as well."
The Perham 400 relay foursome nipped the DL squad of Andi Weiss, Kayla Lang, Paige Raaf and Ashtin Spies to secure the duael victory.
The Lakers did have some top-heavy performances, winning nine events, including two apiece byby each of Melissa Paakh and Libby Larson.
For Paakh, just having a good meet was her focus, as she did just that, winning the 200 individual medley with a 2:16.11 and the 100 butterfly with a time of 58.62 -- which eclipsed her old pool record of 58.91.
"I had a bad practice (Monday), so I was really worried about the meet tonight," Paakh said. "It was all in my head, but when I swam the 200 butterfly, I was wondering if I broke the (pool) record again.
"I felt really good in the water."
Larson's goal was to just win the 200 freestyle, which she did with a time of 2:09.81, and do well in the 500, in which she won itwhich she won with a 5:36.54.
Larson is creeping upin on the DLHS 500 freestyle record, which stands at 5:30. She was within three seconds of the record last year and is expecting to surpass it this time around.
"I want to shatter that record and I came close last year," Larson said. "I'm still getting there, though."
Junior Shayna Dugger took top honors in diving with a 223.60, while her teammate, sophomore Taryn Kobriger took second with a 191.60, which was a personal best mark.
"The girls are working on their form, yet, and there is still some learning and fine tuning going on," said DL diving coach Bobbi Jo Koons. "They are all doing pretty well so far, though."
Sophomore Andi Weiss won the 50 freestyle with a 27.65, while sophomore Ashtin Spies was a victor in the 100 backstroke with a 1:05.84, and the 100 freestyle with a sub-minute 57.87.
The 200-medley relay of Spies, Paige Raaf, Paakh and Weiss waswere triumphant with a time of 1:59.95, thus accomplishing a goal of hitting under the two-minute mark.
"That's their best time of the season, so far," said McCarthy said of the 200-medley relay squad.
With the Lakers having more than a few younger swimmers breaking in on the varsity level, it's been up to the older and experienced swimmers to help them along.
"We're just trying to get to know them better and trying to break them in and become part of the family," Paakh said, who is a four-year starter as a sophomore already. "Our team is becoming like a family."
Which will only bode well for the Lakers during for their busy part of the schedule coming up, which includes the Fosston Invite on Saturday, starting at noon.
Perham at Detroit Lakes, Tuesday, Sept. 23.
