Perham wraps up conference title with sweep of Detroit Lakes baseball

The Perham Yellowjackets took advantage of some lethargic Laker bats to virtually cinch the Mid-State Conference title Friday with a doubleheader sweep of Detroit Lakes at Washington Ballpark.

The Laker's bats were as cold as the frigid wind, as Perham's pitchers limited the home team to eight hits total in the doubleheader in 10-0 and 8-1 losses.

"We just didn't hit the ball," said DL head coach Steve Fuhs. "I didn't see a lot of enthusiasm from our guys. When we got down, we didn't get better."

Perham, which is undefeated in conference play with an 8-0 record, pounded out 12 hits in game one and 10 more in the nightcap.

DL senior pitcher Nick Polejewski was able to keep a grip on the Yellowjacket's bats in the first game leading up to the third inning.

But Perham was able to start timing Polejewski's offspeed pitches in the third frame, with five consecutive batters reaching base on three straight singles, a walk and one of DL's six errors.

After retiring leadoff hitter Shane Miller to start the third, Polejewski saw Brad Ellingson, Anthony Ruther and Nathan Schmitz go for consecutive singles to load the bases.

A walk to Gavin Biegler put Perham up 1-0, which was followed by an error and a sacrifice fly by Tyler Lynne for the 3-0 advantage.

Perham kept coming up with clutch hits, including an RBI single by Ellingson in the fourth and a three-run homer by Lynne in a four-run sixth to open the game up 9-0.

Four different Perham batters went for two hits apiece, while Lynne finished with four RBIs.

"We knew Perham was a good fastball hitting team, so we had Nick (Polejewski) throw a lot of junk at them and more offspeed stuff," Fuhs said. "But Perham started timing him, but Nick pitched well enough early to keep us in the game."

There wasn't much of a threat posed by DL, with only one Laker getting past second base. Brock Johnson had two of the Lakers' three hits.

Perham trounced on the Lakers early in game two, notching four runs in the top of the first, including a three-run homer by Lynne.

Ruther also added a fence buster in the fifth, with a two-run blast to put Perham up 7-0.

Lynne again had four RBIs for eight on the day, while the Yellowjackets had five extra-base hits, including two homers and three doubles off of DL pitcher Reed Oistad.

The Lakers (6-6) will visit Section 8-2A foe Frazee on Friday, starting at 4 p.m.

"Right now, we just have to play to get better for the playoffs," Fuhs said. "We need to see improvement in the rest of our final seven regular season games."
