Former Fargo resident Peter Hilleboe, 87, of Detroit Lakes, died Tuesday, November 18, 2008 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes.

Peter Stuart Hilleboe was born to Christian and Mabel (Johnson) Hilleboe on Sept. 24, 1921 in Minneapolis. He graduated from NDAC (now North Dakota State University) in 1943. He then served with the U.S. Navy, 1943-46. Following his discharge, he attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, where he earned a master's degree in economics. Peter married Sally Fleck in 1946. They made their home in Fargo, where he was a building contractor. Several sections of Fargo housing carry the Hilleboe name.

Peter was elected to the Fargo City Commission, where he was one of the youngest people to serve as a commissioner. He then served 12 years in the North Dakota House of Representatives. While in the Legislature, he was the first person in the country to introduce a bill calling for term limits. He was often heard to say, "If you can't accomplish what you were going to do in 12 years, you are working for yourself and not for the people who elected you."

Peter married Margaret "Peggy" Brennan in 1985. He served as a broker for Piper Jaffrey in Fargo and was a financial consultant for Gate City Savings and Loan in Fargo. In the 1960s, he also owned and operated the Lamplite Lounge in south Moorhead.

Survivors include his wife, Peggy of Fargo; children, Laura (Greg) Eisinger, Stuart (Carla) Hilleboe, Kristina Hilleboe and Amy Hilleboe; and six grandchildren.

Condolences may be sent to the Hilleboe Family at 705 13th Ave. N., No. 216, Fargo, ND, 58102.
