Piatz is steady on his way to winning Mid-Am division
Perry Piatz found out that steady and consistency can win one championships.
Piatz’ par-like golf game earned him the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament’s Mid-Am division, after his 5 and 3 victory over Fargo’s Jay Olafson, who has won two titles in the past four years.
“I just wanted to hit fairways and greens and went for pars,” Piatz said. “That’s my goal when playing, making pars. If I carded 18 pars in a round, I think I would win a lot of matches.”
But Piatz still pulled off the birdie, in which he had three of them on the back nine against Olafson to key his victory.
The first came on hole 11, which was a 35-foot bending putt to put Piatz 2-up, while a birdie on hole 12 put him 3-up.
“That putt on 11 was key, generally I don’t putt well out here,” Piatz said.
The longtime Pine to Palm golfer is thrilled to have won some tournament silver and his new status as champion.
“It feels fantastic,” Piatz said. “It’s always nice to get your name up on the board (at the Detroit Country Club). I never thought I would get my name up there.”
