Polar Fest winners in plunge, races
Once again, the Polar Plunge was a great success.
The weather was bearable, some records were broken, some goals weren't quite met, but overall, the annual event was a great fund-raiser for the Boys and Girls Club of Detroit Lakes, raising nearly $40,000.
This year there were 164 jumpers, breaking last year's record of 155.
"There were lots more costumes and groups jumping, which tells me people are getting their friends and family and going, 'hey, let's jump' and doing things together," Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Pat Petermann said, "and it's getting bigger and better every year."
Although the number of jumpers was a record breaker, the amount raised wasn't quite. Nearly $40,000 was raised this year, falling short of the $53,000 raised last year.
Individual costume winners were:
First: Attorney Lisa Morrison, who jumped with a business suit, briefcase and glasses.
Second: Bridget Bergen, as Polar Pete's girlfriend Polar Penny.
Third: Richard Holmes as hula guy.
Group costume winners were:
First: Breakfast Rotary, who were Heather Kivi, Garret Frank and Doug Gillam.
Second: USDA group of nuns and priests, who were Jeff Norby, Crystal Erickson and Barb Fyffe.
Third: Batman and Spidey, who didn't register so Peterman said he didn't get their names.
Both categories were awarded cash prizes of $100 for first place, $50 for second place and $25 for third place.
