Police chase through Wahpeton-Breckenridge ends with man in jail, power outage
BRECKENRIDGE, Minn. - A 23-year-old man wanted on federal weapons violations is in jail after allegedly leading police on a car chase through Breckenridge and neighboring Wahpeton, N.D., leaving three officers with minor injuries and knocking out power to part of Breckenridge.
According to Breckenridge Police Chief Nate Harder:
At around 4 p.m. Wednesday, Wahpeton police attempted to arrest Andrew Laborico on a federal warrant at a Wahpeton gas station. He fled the scene in a gray sedan.
The ensuing chase reached speeds around 75 mph as it continued through Wahpeton and into Breckenridge. Laborico threw cash and other items out the window at several points during the chase, Harder said.
As the pursuit reached the east edge of the city, a Breckenridge police SUV used a pit maneuver on the car, sending both vehicles into the ditch. The SUV hit a utility pole, briefly knocking out power to part of Breckenridge.
Laborico allegedly fled the car on foot and was chased down by a Breckenridge K-9 officer. A loaded handgun was recovered from the car, Harder said.
Three officers in the police SUV sustained minor injuries and were treated at a local hospital. No one else was injured, "and that's the most important thing," Harder said.
Police pursuits through populated areas are routinely called off when there are threats to public safety, except in instances involving an armed fugitive, Harder said.
Officers executed the pit maneuver at their first opportunity outside a populated residential area, he said.
"Letting him go back into a populated area was not an option at that point," he said.
In addition to the federal warrant, felony charges against Laborico are now pending in Richland County, N.D., and Wilkin County, Minn., Harder said.
Federal marshals are expected to pick up Laborico from the Wilkin County Jail today, he said.
Sheriff's deputies from Richland and Wilkin counties and members of the Southeast Multi-County Drug Task Force assisted in the matter.
