Ponsford man gets jail for assault
A Ponsford man was convicted and sentenced in Becker County District Court on a felony domestic assault charge.
Brett Warren Stevens, 18, of 49238 280th St., Ponsford, was given a stay of imposition on a potential prison sentence, on conditions including completion of 30 days in jail and up to 5 years of supervised probation. He must also pay $1,160 in court fines and fees. If he successfully completes probation, the charge will be reduced to a misdemeanor conviction on his record.
Two additional assault charges were dismissed at sentencing,
Stevens was accused of assaulting a Ponsford woman at the home they shared on Jan. 25. According to the complaint, he punched her in the stomach and side, pushed her down on the bed and put a pillow over her head so she couldn’t breathe. He reportedly only stopped the assault when he heard a vehicle outside.
The vehicle belonged to a friend of the woman, who subsequently took her young child and fled the residence in the vehicle.
Stevens had two prior convictions for fifth degree assault on his record, as well as one for second degree assault with a deadly weapon.
