Ponsford man sentenced for 4th domestic assault
A Ponsford man was sentenced last week in Becker County District Court on a felony domestic assault charge.
Roman Jesus Chavez, Jr., 28, of 56311 284th St., Ponsford, was ordered to serve 21 months (1¾ years) in prison, with credit for 208 days already served, and fined $210, to be paid from his prison earnings.
Chavez was accused of assaulting a woman at the Pine Point residence where they lived with their children. The alleged incident occurred around 1:20 a.m. on June 25, 2013.
The woman said she and Chavez were arguing about her phone when the fight escalated and he punched her in the back with a closed fist, before grabbing the cell phone from her hand, bending her fingers back painfully as he did so.
Chavez had three prior assault convictions on his record, including a Sept. 19, 2012 conviction for domestic assault, one on Sept. 21, 2009 for fifth degree assault, and another on Oct. 28, 2003, also for fifth degree assault.
