The three facets of baseball didn't come together for the Detroit Lakes Post 15 team in Fargo's God Bless America Tournament, Friday through Sunday.

The Post 15 squad went 1-4 in the weekend tournament, as either defense, batting or pitching was a weakness in each game.

"If we can field the ball and pitch strikes, we'll be in every game," said Legion head coach Mitch McLeod.

That's what precisely happened in DL's lone win, a 12-1 victory over Pierre, S.D., in the opener Friday.

Lefty Ben Lindquist had only one walk and DL played error-free baseball, while the bats ignited for 12 hits.

After Pierre scored in the first inning, Lindquist limited their bats to just one more hit in the final four innings, while posting three-up and three-down innings in all five -- after he picked off the batter with the single on first base.

"Ben pitched great," McLeod said. "He threw strikes and allowed just three hits. The kids also hit the ball well."

The Lakers used a seven-run fourth to open the game up, after being tied 1-1 after the third.

Catcher Kirk McLeod had a two-run double to break open the game, while Brian Labat followed with a two-run single.

DL added four more runs in the fifth, with Labat picking up his third RBI and shortstop Connor McLeod lacing a two-run single.

Labat and Brock Johnson each had two hits, while Connor McLeod finished with three RBIs.

"The bottom of the order really produced," Mitch McLeod added.

In game two, DL faced the Manitoba (Canada) Select team and played them tough, before losing 4-2.

Jordan Manning held his own against a potent lineup, allowing just five hits.

DL didn't produce at the plate this time around, gaining just two hits in the game, with Kirk McLeod delivering a two-run single in the fifth for the team's only runs.

"They had a good lefty on the mound, but I was still disappointed in our hitting," Mitch McLeod said. "Jordan (Manning) pitched well and he helped keep us in the game."

Defense was the obstacle against a good Tri-City squad, as DL committed four errors, which led to nine unearned runs in a 12-2 loss.

An error in the second led to two unearned runs, while another boot led to two more runs in the fourth.

"After the fifth inning, the score should have been 3-2 (instead of 6-2)," the DL coach said.

T.J. Manning struggled on the mound with six walks, as Andy Fondrick came in for relief.

Tri-City had nine hits, while Jordan Manning and Logan Baker each had two for DL.

Labat had an RBI as well.

Fargo jumped on top of DL pitcher Brock Johnson early, scoring 10 runs in the first three innings.

Their bats ended the game with a walk-off grand slam to invoke the 10-run rule for a 15-3 win.

"Again, I was very disappointed in our hitting," Mitch McLeod said.

DL collected just five hits in the game, with Connor McLeod picking up two RBIs with a single in the fifth.

Andy Pederson added an RBI hit in the fourth.

With tired arms and the pitching rotation depleted, the Lakers were swamped by Mitchell, S.D., Sunday by the score of 23-4.

Labat started on the mound, his first pitching appearance since his Babe Ruth days.

"Brian threw strikes, it was just that Mitchell is such a good hitting team with a lot of college players returning," Mitch McLeod said. "I was happy with how Brian threw strikes. Many of their hits had seeing eyes."

Fondrick came in for relief for the third-consecutive day as well, while Pederson also pitched some.

"I was proud of how Fondrick and Pederson ate up innings, they gutted it out," Mitch McLeod added.

DL is 5-6 on the season and played in Perham Tuesday evening. They will travel to Fergus Falls Thursday night for a 5 p.m. start.
