Potvin to direct All-City Choir
The 36th Annual Detroit Lakes All-City Choir Festival will be held Friday, April 9, and Saturday, April 10. Over 500 Detroit Lakes choir students in grades 6-12 will be participating in this event.
Mark Potvin, a native of Detroit Lakes and a resident of Princeton, Minn., will be the clinician and guest conductor of this year's All-City Choir Festival. Potvin earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, where he studied under Weston Noble and sang in the world-renowned Nordic Choir.
Potvin is in his second year of the St. Cloud State University Masters Degree program emphasizing in choral conducting. Mark conducts the St. Cloud State University Men's Choir and is the Assistant Conductor and Tour Manager for the St. Cloud State University Concert Choir.
In addition to his work at SCSU, Potvin is the artistic director for the East Central Minnesota Chorale (ECMC), a community choir based in Cambridge. As the culmination of Mark's graduate studies he recently completed a conducting recital entitled "Haydn, Mozart, and the missa brevis," performed by ECMC on March 20.
Choirs under Potvin's direction have performed at conventions of the Minnesota Music Educators Association, the American Choral Directors Association of Minnesota, the Dorian Vocal Invitational at Luther College and in the Choral Arts Finale at Orchestra Hall in Minneapolis.
Prior to arrival at SCSU, Potvin served for seven years as vocal music instructor at Princeton High School. Potvin previously served as director of the SCSU Chamber Singers during the 2008-2009 year.
Mark is the 2010 recent recipient of the F. Melius Christiansen/graduate Study Scholarship from ACDA-MN. In the fall of 2008, Potvin was named "Outstanding Young Choral Director" by the same organization. He has twice been selected as "Advisor of the Year" by the Princeton Schools Activities Department for his work with the PHS Chamber Singers and Fall Musical.
At the All-City Grand Finale Concert on Saturday, April 10, Potvin will direct one of two selections performed by each participating choir in addition to three mass choir selections featuring all choir students in grades 6-12.
The Grand Concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Ralph Anderson Gymnasium at the Detroit Lakes High School. The public is cordially invited to attend the concert. Choir members are selling advance tickets and tickets will also be available at the door. Admission prices are $5 for Adults and $3 for Students in grades 6-12.
Children in grades 5 and under will be admitted free of charge.
