Entering their second year of varsity play, the Lake Park-Audubon softball team will bring in a solid infield and experience on the mound.

Junior Christine McIntire will be entering her third year as the Raiders' starting pitcher, and she'll be backed by a strong infield.

"Christine is a great athlete and has a lot of drive," said LP-A head coach Tiffany Nagel. "She's been working with pitching coach Bob Soukup and he's been helping with her change-up."

McIntire also has the luxury of having assistant coach Kris Omberg to work with. Omberg was a top pitcher for Detroit Lakes during her high school career.

McIntire will have a good connection with sophomore catcher Chelsey Raaen, who was behind the plate last year.

Having good chemistry between pitcher and catcher is an important component to have, Nagel said.

"I can't believe how Chelsey has grown over the year," Nagel said. "She has a lot of heart, too. The chemistry is there between (McIntire) and Chelsey, they work great together."

Freshman Tate Hall will man first base, with sophomore Larissa Gage back at second.

Sophomore Kim Cigelske will anchor the infield at shortstop, providing some good leather, while freshman Andi Knudsvig will see time at third base and the outfield.

"We'll have to work on our outfield the most, we just need more speed and some good arms out there," Nagel said of her inexperienced outfield.

Last year was the first time many of the Raiders saw live varsity-level pitching and the team will build on that after getting into a groove towards the end of last season.

"We won a few games there at the end of the season and we'll need to improve on our offense," Nagel included. "McIntire has an awesome bat, but we'll need to work overall on our batting."

Nagel wants to see an improvement over last season. Better at-bats, as well as solid defense, will be key.

The Raiders open at Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton Thursday, April 9.
