Reading Corps serves 15,000 in MN
Reading Corps began in 2003 with 24 AmeriCorps members serving 250 children in seven Minnesota Head Start programs. 15,000 Minnesota children from age 3 to grade 3 are being tutored by the Minnesota Reading Corps program during the 2009-2010 school year. We estimate that this number will grow to 18,000 for 2010-2011.
Minnesota Reading Corps places members as either a classroom member, embedded into a classroom of children ages 3 to 5 to help kids develop early literacy skills in preparation for kindergarten; a literacy tutor, who works one-on-one with children in kindergarten through third grade; or a volunteer coordinator, who is placed in an elementary school to recruit, train and manage volunteers who dedicate time to help young children learn to read.
555 Minnesota Reading Corps tutors have been placed in 318 schools across Minnesota for the 2009-2010 school year.
Minnesota Reading Corps is administered by the Minnesota Literacy Council. For more information, visit www.MinnesotaReadingCorps.org.
