Red River in Fargo drops below flood stage for first time in 61 days

FARGO - The Red River in Fargo-Moorhead fell below flood stage early today after spending a record 61 days above the 18-foot mark.

The river dropped from 18 feet to 17.99 feet at about 1:45 a.m. today, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's river gauge near Fargo's water treatment plant at 13th Avenue South.

The river stood at 17.97 feet at 7:15 a.m.

The previous record for most consecutive days above flood stage was a 54-day period ending May 22, 2006. However, the flood stage in Fargo was raised from 17 feet to 18 feet in November 2006, which made this year's streak even more impressive.
